You don't have to go to a university just because it has a cool name, but Nova Southeastern University (Nova for short), is a top choice for Miami apartment-ites looking for something tailored to more science-based career prospects. Founded in 1964, this private, four-year university takes in just over 15,000 undergrads and 17-18,000 postgrads per year, under a staff of 4,319. The university's three main campuses are located in Davie,

Port Everglades and North Miami Beach, as well as two distance learning centers in Jamaica,The Bahamas, Miami, Orlando and West Palm Beach.

Nova is noted for its dental, pharmacy and optometry schools, the only ones of their kind to exist in South Florida, but the institution offers a wide variety of majors, from journalism to environmental science. The university features a nursing school, business school, a college of education and a general college of arts and sciences. Their graduate schools range from law to business and arts and sciences (which also includes a rigorous writing program).

If you're not looking for an apartment in the area, the only university dorms are located in the Davie Campus (a 30-minute drive from Miami). Student life is pretty solitary, and the only negative to Nova life is that the university's advisors can be a little impatient (and sometimes not too knowledgeable), but the public speakers and luncheon guests (which have included the 14th Dalai Lama, Salman Rushdie and James Earl Jones), are in line with the inspirational atmosphere this university bestows on its students.
